Religious Accommodation Request Process for Faculty

The University prohibits discrimination based on an employee’s religion or creed and will provide reasonable accommodations for employees to enable them to exercise their sincerely held religious beliefs. More specifically, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (“Title VII”) and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (“NJLAD”) require that Rutgers University reasonably accommodate an employee whose sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance conflicts with a work requirement unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the University.

The Office of Academic Labor Relations (“ALR”) is responsible for overseeing and coordinating requests for accommodation received from faculty based on religion. As an initial step, an employee should inform his/her supervisor or Shannon Kenny, Senior Labor Relations Specialist in ALR, of the need for a reasonable accommodation based on religion. The faculty member, a family member, or someone else designated by the faculty member may notify the University on the faculty member’s behalf of his/her need for a reasonable accommodation.

In order to request a religious accommodation, the employee needs to complete an Accommodation Request Form.

An employee may also submit any additional documentation or information from his/her religious or spiritual leader that s/he believes will be helpful in ALR’s discussion with the employee’s department about the request. The completed Accommodation Request Form, along with any other documentation or information that the faculty member would like to submit, should be returned directly to Shannon Kenny via regular mail, email or fax.
